Annapolis Junction, MD is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel and Howard counties. The area has a strong history with the railroad; it was established as a rail junction in 1840. In 1844 the first news telegram announcing the presidential candidates was sent from a railroad office in Annapolis Junction. Annapolis Junction railroads played an important part in the Civil War as rail was the only practical way to move troops from Annapolis to Washington. Nearby Fort Meade was founded during World War I and Annapolis Junction was sometimes referred to as Fort Meade Junction. Forte Meade has overshadowed Annapolis Junction in modern times and much of the area is now zoned for industrial use. Most of the area residents live in the nearby towns of Savage or Fort Meade. There are interesting places to visit in the area including the NSA affiliated National Cryptologic Museum and the Patuxent Research Refuge. The Patuxent Research Refuge was established in 1936 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and is now run by the U.S. Geological Survey agency. The Patuxent was created for the purpose of researching natural resource conservation and is now responsible for providing information and implementing findings to U.S. agencies managing natural resources. There are two areas of the refuge open to the public, the North Tract which offers hunting, fishing, trails and interpretive programs and the South Track which houses the National Wildlife Visitor Center.
